Public Information Remains Elusive: Study (Cambodia news in Khmer)

A study commissioned by the Cambodian Center for Independent Media and Freedom House has found that more than 80 percent of the Cambodians understand their rights to information, but only 19 percent of them try to exercise it. "They have complained of difficulties to seek the public information," said Pa Nguon Teang, executive director of CCIM.
"This is because the authorities don't want to give out information." (Men Kimseng in Washington, Skype interview with Pa Nguon Teang.)

Companies See Potential in Internet Growth (Cambodia news in Khmer)

Online businesses have grown fast in countries with developed Internet infrastructure. But despite an undeveloped Net infrastructure, Cambodia's fast online growth in recent years promises new business. Bun Tharum, a technology reporter and VOA Khmer contributor, says that though Cambodian online entrepreneurship is in its early stages, companies without an online presence now are missing out on opportunities. In this "Digital Voices" segment, Bun Tharum discusses online businesses Khmer24 and Little Fashion. (Soeung Sophat in Washington interviewing Bun Tharum in Phnom Penh via Skype)

Cambodian Stock Exchange Sees Slow Progress

There are only about 3,700 accounts at the exchange, and still only 12 companies trading there

PHNOM PENH - Since the public opening of the security exchange in Cambodia in 2011, progress has been slow. Not everyone knows about the exchange, and not everyone can afford to invest.

There are only about 3,700 accounts at the exchange, and still only 12 companies trading there. A third of the accounts are foreign. Currently, the Phnom Penh Security Exhcange building remains quiet, with only about 2,000 shares traded.

Sun Sokhet, a broker there, says the idea of the stock exchange is still new, which makes it difficult for people to invest.

“Unlike people in developed countries, Cambodians, with restricted knowledge, are reluctant to invest their money in something they have never experienced before,” he said. “And some people even compare investing money in the stock exchange to playing a game.”

To invest in the exchange, a potential investor must register his or her name and open an account, which costs around $5. But that’s not something everyone can afford.

Phon Sophat, a private driver for the Raffles Hotel, told VOA Khmer that with his wages investing his money in the exchange is not possible.

But stocks are not completely unaffordable. In August, the highest-priced stock was about $2.50 a share, and the lowest was close to $1.25.

Leing Borey, 23, a student in information technology, said, like many people, his knowledge of the exchange is limited. He’d heard some information about it on the radio and TV, he said. “However, I don’t really know how exactly it is working or progressing.”

The Cambodian government owns 55 percent of the exchange; the rest is owned by a South Korean company. Only one government company, the Phnom Penh Water Supply, is trading shares. It has around 89 million shares for sale.

Neou Seiha, an economic analyst, said it will be hard to convince Cambodians to invest their money for now, but in the future, the exchange is likely to grow.

Lamun Soleil, deputy director of the market’s operation department, said the stock exchange is new to Cambodians. But he said he was optimistic about its future.

“A stock exchange plays a vital role in economic development, since it will help Cambodian people who don’t have a budget to open a new business,” he said. “It gives people options to consider.”

Cambodia’s Jasmine Rice Awarded World Best Rice for 2012

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia’s aromatic variety of jasmine rice was awarded top prize at the Rice Trader World Rice Conference in Bali, Indonesia, last month.

Second and third place went to Thai rice varieties, as more than 40 rice-exporting countries attended the conference, from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28.

Cambodia is now seeking to expand its exports of its jasmine rice and other varieties.

Ung Chhengsear, a representative of Cambodian rice export company Lor Ek Heng Sek Meas, who attended the ceremony, said the award will help raise the profile of Cambodian rice, which has gone relatively unnoticed.

“So this will help increase our rice exports to meet the government’s ambition of 1 million tons of rice exports by 2015,” he told VOA Khmer by phone from Indonesia.

Twelve companies from Cambodia attended this year’s conference, sponsored by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation.

Bas Rozemuller, IFC project manager, who led Cambodia’s delegation, told VOA Khmer that many buyers had begun contacting Cambodian companies following the announcement of the award.

The rice variety was judged on its overall quality, including texture, shape, flavor and aroma. It is one of four varieties of rice that Cambodian exporters sell abroad.

Hean Vanhan, deputy director general of the Ministry of Agriculture’s general directorate, said Cambodia’s rice exports are continuing to improve. The country has exported more than 420,000 tons of rice so far in the first eight months of the year, he said.

International recognition of the rice’s quality will help exports, said Mey Kalyan, a senior advisor to the Supreme National Economic Council and a key contributor to the government’s rice policy.

“We earned No. 1,” he said. “So we have to move to the next step, which is to make our rice even better known and trusted worldwide.”

Cambodia will host the World Rice Conference next year.

CIMB overweight on Thai stocks, despite earnings fall

Much of the fall was attributable to stock losses of energy and petrochem companies.
"We believe this will reverse in the third quarter as oil prices bounce back. Thus, we reiterate our Overweight call on the petrochem sector as earnings are poised to recover in the third quarter," CIMB said in a research note.
The house still expects the SET index to end this year at 1,350 points. The index today showed a slight loss of 0.49 point to end the day at 1,223.91 points.
Market catalysts include strong private investment and consumer spending. About 32 per cent of the companies under its coverage reported better-than-expected quarterly results while 33 per cent were in line and 35 per cent lower than expected. It consequently revised down earnings forecasts by 1.3 per cent for this year and by 1.6 per cent for next year. Following the revisions, it expects the Thai market to show 22 per cent core earnings growth this year and 15 per cent next year.
"We believe the Thai market will continue to do well on the back of strong private investment and consumer spending. Improved overseas sentiment and strong foreign inflows are likely to support the market," it said.
After selling for several months, foreign investors turned net buyers in July and this buying momentum is expected to continue. Foreign ownership of the Thai market improved to
almost 26 per cent recently, although still low compared with the 34 per cent in 2008. Foreign investors account for about a quarter of the market by trading volume with retail investors making
up 53 per cent, local institutions 8 per cent and brokers' proprietary trading the remainder.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand’s data showed that in the first half of this year, 447 listed companies showed a decline in net profits though combined revenue increased by 13.42 per cent to Bt5.06 trillion. Banking, food & drink, commerce, real estate and medical sectors showed the highest earnings growth.
In the second quarter alone, their combined sale revenue reached Bt2.55 trillion while earnings fell to Bt130.4 billion due to higher sale and interest costs. Moreover, they also showed combined foreign exchange loss of Bt7.35 billion, against Bt12.7 billion forex gain in the first quarter.
"The results followed a drop in earnings of energy, steel and agricultural stocks, as well as insurance companies which booked losses from last year’s floods. Excluding results of companies involved in commodities markets, the listed companies’ earnings in the second quarter and first half would have shown a 32.01 per cent and 8.80 per cent growth rate from the same period last year," said SET President Charamporn Jotikasthira

Though listed companies' earnings dropped 13.58 per cent on year to Bt344.4 billion in the first half, CIMB Securities (Thailand) remains overweight on the Thai stock market.
